Haven Trumps Rams Soccer, The Herd

After a week that saw rain delays push back almost every single Harriton athletic event, both soccer teams took to the field Friday against Strath Haven. The boys team, coming off a 0-2 performance in the Southern Lehigh tournament, was backed by an impressive “whiteout” from The Herd. Despite the fan support, the Rams lost 2-1 on a late goal and fell to 0-3 on the year. Coach Biff Sturla is still sticking to his guns, calling the squad the best he’s ever coached, but the Rams will have to improve significantly to back his words. Is it possible? Certainly. The Rams are going through a youth movement after losing a fair amount of seniors from last year’s team and should click as the season progresses. Nevertheless, their start has not been encouraging.

The girls soccer team fared no better, falling to the Panthers 3-1 to drop to 0-1-1 on the year. Strath Haven is certainly a tough opponent, but the fact remains that the Harriton soccer teams are winless through five games. The girls will attempt to turn things around when they host Springfield on Tuesday, while the boys take to the road to challenge the Cougars. It would be a shock to not emerge with at least one team’s first victory of the new season.
