A Paradox: An Exciting Cross Country Meet vs. Upper Darby and Ridley

The Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams ended their dual meet season with a bang. On the Girls side, juniors Maura and Jane Henderson placed 1st and 2nd, respectively. Sophomore Ali Zamsky was not far behind in 5th place. Freshman Tasha Greene and junior Kate Clark rounded out the top five scoring runners in 8th and 10th, respectively. The Girls were able to defeat Upper Darby and Ridley.

In the Boy’s race, juniors Michael Walsh, Sam Payne, and Reed Kimzey placed 2nd, 5th, and 6th, respectively. The fourth Harriton runner in was sophomore Jonah Gillespie-Sickman in 7th place. What really ensured the victory for the Boys were the fifth and sixth Harriton runners in: freshman Bruce Herriot (fifth) and sophomore Connor Todd (sixth). The way Cross Country meets are scored, the first five runners in for each team’s places get counted up. The team with the lowest score at the end wins. In this particular race on the Boy’s side, Upper Darby and Harriton were tied at the end. So, it came down to the sixth Harriton runner in. About 200 meters before the finish line, Bruce Herriot and Connor Todd were running with an Upper Darby runner. If Bruce got past this runner, the meet would be tied. He did. So to secure a victory, it came down to Connor Todd. Bruce was ahead, so now it was just Connor Todd and the Upper Darby runner. Connor kicked past him, ensuring the victory. Thus, both the Boys and Girls Harriton Cross Country teams had a winning record for the 2013 season.

Both teams have a good chance at placing high in the Central League Championships held next week on the same course at Rose-Tree Park in Media.

Wish them luck as they embark on their last two meets of the season, Central Leagues, and District I championships the following week.
