Sensational Seniors

The seniors of Harriton High School had a great fall season this year, leaving Harriton with a not only a bang, but also much appreciation.

Four seniors: Jenny White, Victoria Marks, Lindsey Barrison, and Danae Robert, captained the girl’s varsity tennis team. Victoria stepped up at the last minute and played 3rd singles in the District Tournament. Jenny White competed in the league tournament and became part of the 2nd doubles team in the whole Central League. The Junior Varsity team was lead by the seniors Allison Schwartz, Sarah Forer, and Emily Salove. Junior Becca Shapiro commented: “This year’s seniors were all great players and amazing people to be around. It is very sad to see them go. I know everyone will miss them so much next season.”

The seniors on the boy’s soccer team also captained the team well.  Sam Blumenthal, Mike Diehl, Zach Herman, Xavier Zambrana, Stephen Lorenz, Max Myers, Kenton Weigel, and Yao Sedzro represented the class. They consistently performed well both athletically and in their roles as leaders for the team and The Herd, leading the boys to a berth in the district playoffs.

The girls soccer team also has some outstanding players who will be missed, with Bailey Ebby recruited by Hobart for her skills, and Katie Melvin. This year, Katie set the record for the most career goals in four seasons at Harriton. Also on the team are Hannah Udren, and Nikki Voluck, who have not been recruited as of yet and are still undecided. Katie, Nikki, and Bailey made first, second, and honorable mention Central League, respectively. Junior Annika Ayer says, of this year’s senior squad: “I’ll miss the seniors next year. It really won’t be the same without them.”

Abri Bernstein, Jenny Langer, Nikki Silfen, Samantha Hansel, Michelle Stein, and Chris Lasprogata are the seniors who represented the field hockey team. Chris Lasprogata was a sight to see in his skirt, braving gender scrutiny to have an amazing season, and he made second team All-Central with his skills. Together, they lead the field hockey team to a successful season. Junior Taylor Strekko commented: Our captains, Jenny Langer and Abri Bernstein, were great leaders on and off the field. I’m going to miss them and the rest of the seniors so much next year!”

Volleyball also had some outstanding seniors, championed by Laura Walsh, Nadirah Anderson, Freida Brown, and Tempest Horshaw.

There are outstanding seniors to be found out on the gridiron as well. Quarterback Matt Brannau is rated the 6th best long snapper in the country, and is currently being recruited by NCAA Division 3 schools. D-1 and D-2 schools are looking at Miron Hayes and Andre Pedelton. Other seniors on the team are Tom Bernicker, Cole Peta, Evan Rosen and Malik Jackson, all of whom brought this team together into a real force.

On Cross Country, the seniors were part of an underrepresented class, with only three of them on the team. Pavali Hannekein, Jerry Delaney, and Hillary Lemonick all ran their last race on Friday at the District Championship at Lehigh University. Despite their small numbers, their presence on the course is irreplaceable.

Overall, the seniors on fall sports teams did their part to make sure this season was a memorable one. From broken records to encouraging words, the class of 2014 can step off the field and feel proud of the things it has accomplished. All of the seniors will be missed next year. However, despite the devastating losses, there is no reason to give up hope. The underclassmen have learned much from their elders. Juniors such as Maura Henderson, who will be racing at the Cross Country State Championship on Nov 2nd, and the always-stacked tennis team, in addition to a variety of other rising seniors who excel in their sports make next year a year of promise. Thank you seniors! Your influence will continue to be felt around the school even after you have left. Good luck in college!
