Athlete of the Week: Griffin Berk

This week’s Harriton athlete of the week is Griffin “Lil Bean” Berkowitz. He is a junior that starts on the Harriton High School boys’ varsity basketball team.

Griffin is a true example of how hard work and dedication will eventually pay off.

“Every day when I got home from school I worked on my handles and my shooting until my mom forced me to come inside”.

The progress that he has made over the past 5 years has been truly remarkable. His basketball career started in 7th grade, when the young and upcoming talent was trying out for the Welsh Valley Middle school basketball team. Sadly, Griffin did not make the team, as point guard and current Harriton varsity soccer superstar Serhat Sakarcan made the team over him.

This was truly a setback, but this further fueled his desire to be the best. Griffin spent time in the offseason developing his fundamentals and perfecting his signature moves. He went back to tryout in 8th grade and made the team.

Lil Bean worked his way up the ladder; as a freshman he was on the freshman team, and as a sophomore he made the junior varsity team. Now reaching the start of his 11th grade season, he is on the varsity team.

Reporters were able to score an interview with Berkowitz earlier this week.

When asked how he is able to manage his schoolwork, produce music, and succeed academically, he said: “Yeah, juggling a rap career and a basketball career is kinda tough, but I manage to pull it off.”

Griffin is constantly in the gym trying to improve his game, and he puts in a lot of time in the classroom as well. After a close win this weekend in the boys’ first tournament, the team is looking forward to a great year with Griffin.
