Crumbs Bake Shop: A Jewel in the Crown of Bakeries

Nestled in the courtyard of the famous Suburban Square, you will find one of the most famed bakeries in the country. In June of 2013, the Ardmore shopping center welcomed Crumbs Bake Shop with open arms. Founded in 2003 by Jason and Mia Bauer, Crumbs has since expanded from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to over 70 bakeries all over America, including in its lineup a gluten-free bakery in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

Crumbs is most definitely known for their cupcakes, with over 50 regular varieties as well as limited edition and flavor-of-the-week collections. The highly popular individual cakes come in an assortment of flavors, each with its own topping, cake flavor, filling and size. Cakes include the typical chocolate and vanilla, as well as the more exotic red velvet, banana and apple cinnamon, to name a few. The bakery bakes “taste”, “classic”, “signature” and “colossal” cupcakes, ranging from 1 to 6.5 inches tall.

However, the possibilities don’t stop there. Crumbs bakes and decorates seasonal cupcakes for every major holiday – think rose colored icing and wax lips for Valentine’s Day, or crushed candy cane topping and gingerbread cutouts for the winter holiday season. If cupcakes aren’t your cup of tea, Crumbs offers a variety of other delectable treats – pies and pastries, donuts and danishes, and savory items, too.

On one particularly snowy, blustery afternoon, I had the chance to drop in to the notorious bakery and sample a few things. Laid out on top of the cupcake case was an inviting plate of pieces of various cupcakes for sampling…and how could I resist? There was a classic chocolate cake dressed up with pink icing for Valentine’s Day; a gooey, caramel and vanilla cupcake titled “Monkey Business”; and a limited edition cake – drumroll, please – the Girl Scout Caramel Coconut cupcake, in honor of the Caramel DeLite cookie sold by Girl Scouts at this time of year.

After devouring the samples, I had the difficult decision of selecting which cupcake to call my own. In the end, I went with the White Hot Chocolate cupcake, and I felt like I was eating a sugary cloud. Piled high with mini marshmallows and white chocolate chips, this cupcake held a surprise at the interior – white chocolate mousse! The cake itself was a timeless, delicate vanilla and piped on top was a vanilla cream cheese frosting. I also got to try the Cookies & Cream cupcake, a chocolate cake that is topped with vanilla-based chocolate cookie frosting and served with America’s favorite cookie – the Oreo! As you can tell, Crumbs doesn’t mess around when it comes to cupcakes.

Nothing can brighten your day up like a cute, scrumptious cupcake. If this bakery sounds like your idea of dessert heaven, be sure to check it out!
