Review of HTC’s Winter Drama: The American Dream and The Lottery

The Harriton Theater Company’s recent production of The American Dream and The Lottery last weekend was a huge success! With full audiences every night, the actors were able to deliver remarkable performances each night. The American Dream and The Lottery are two one-act dramas. The American Dream is a satire on the superficiality of the elusive “American dream,” taking place in the 1950s among a small family. With only a five-person cast, each actor had a huge part and relied on each other heavily. The Lottery, a shorter production of only 25 minutes, takes place in a future farming community with a unique tradition, called “the lottery,” that all townspeople must participate in. The cast included Harriton students, 2 Welsh Valley students, and two much younger kids. Everyone in The American Dream was also in The Lottery, such a challenge for the HTC actors! Emily Goldenberg played the hilarious role of Grandma in The American Dream and instantly transformed to the serious role of Tessie in The Lottery. Seth Silverman played the dauber role of Daddy in The American Dream and of Old Man Warner in The Lottery. Seth also worked heavily on the sound for both productions. With two lead roles, they had to instantaneously change characters as well as change their appearances. Rachel Hockman, Alana Koenig, Emma Seymour, and Alayna Robertson were responsible to change Seth Silverman’s hair and makeup from a clean-shaven businessman into a rough elderly farmer. In a short 15-minute intermission, they were very busy! The crew had a huge role in the success of the two shows. Barbhara Alves and the rest of stage crew built an impressive living room set for The American Dream. Painted red, white, and blue, it was truly remarkable. Sam Eisner designed the light for the production, which is a huge job that she pulled off flawlessly. Eileen Wickline and Ilene Parker built all props for the show, most notably the rocks for The Lottery, which acted as the set. Alana Koenig and Emma Seymour designed the costumes for The American Dream. The future heads of costumes, Kayley O’Connor, Margot Nelson, and Kimmie Krane designed the costumes for The Lottery, proving that they will be able to create beautiful costumes next year. As a whole, these two productions were a huge success. The cast and crew worked tirelessly on these dramas to create an interesting and powerful production.
