Around the World with Anabelle: St. John

Around the World with Anabelle: St. John

It is evident that many of us need a break from the long, cold snow days of winter, seeking the warmth of the sun once again.  I can tell you from experience that the tranquil and perfectly small island of St. John will bring you exactly the escape you need. Its unspoiled beauty is what makes it such a lovely experience – 60% of its land area is a pristine national park.  It is up to you whether to explore this beauty or venture into the town. If you would prefer to explore the natural aspects of St. John, you will not be short of beaches or activities.

Before you hit the sand, take some time to enjoy the island’s wildlife.  On no other island will you find wild donkeys, mongoose, and chickens roaming around. But if you would just like a great beach and an incredible place to stay, Caneel Bay Resort is your best pick. At the snorkel shack there, you can pick up some gear for snorkeling at Caneel Bay, which is, simply put, amazing – you will spot colorful fish of all shapes and sizes, stingrays, lots of squid, an occasional octopus, and dozens of sea turtles.

You can also take out one of their many kayaks or paddleboards to try out in the water.  Paddleboarding is my personal favorite – you will get to experience the ocean in its full stillness and beauty as you slowly move along the water’s surface, and you will be able to see all the way down to the bottom through the perfectly clear blue Caribbean water. Plus, your arms and core will get a good workout! Lastly, if you like, you can swim out a little farther from the shore to hop up onto a floating dock and enjoy the sun.

To try something a little different, get yourself a fishing guide and head out onto the water. You will catch some great bluefin tuna, and they might even let you keep one to bring back to the resort.  The restaurant staff will prepare it to your liking for dinner that night.

Had enough sun and sand?  Take a one-mile hike directly from the resort to the nearby town, Cruz Bay. With plenty of restaurants, fresh seafood options, and ringing island music, this place will feel like a true vacation. You can pick up a souvenir or two in the many small shops selling clothing and home decorations.  And, of course, you cannot leave without getting a virgin piña colada.

You will find St. John to be the quintessential winter getaway, with beaches, water activities, shopping, and serenity all part of this ideal tropical escape.
