Around the World with Anabelle: Monterey Bay, CA

When you think California, the first places that come to mind might be glamorous cities, like LA or San Francisco – but what about the smaller gems?  Under-praised places like Monterey Bay might be the best for you to try. Monterey Bay is a waterfront community on the central coast with a year-round temperate climate.  At the home of the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, you will not be bored among the many options of fun activities for you and your family to try.

First, go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which deserves its great reputation. The aquarium has dozens of equally astonishing exhibits, ranging from jellyfish to octopus to sharks of all sizes.  Its grand size is simply what makes it so incredible.  Be sure to check out either the fish feeding or the sea otter feeding – I would recommend the fish feeding, but neither one will disappoint you.

Once you are done with a half-day adventure at the aquarium, head down to Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf!  Here, you will find restaurants, whale watching, and shopping galore.  Try out the mini glow golf and the laser maze for a fantastic time.

You will not be short of dining here in Monterey Bay.  For all the vegetarians and vegans out there, try out the nearby vegan Mexican restaurant; you will not be disappointed.  After dinner, make sure to head to one of the many ice cream shops – take your pick from Ghirardelli, Carvel, Pinkberry and more.

If you are willing to drive about a half hour, head along the coast to Big Sur.  The beautiful, rocky shores will stun you. If you would prefer not to drive this far, just head down to the equally lovely Point Lobos State Reserve.  Here, you will be able to choose from a couple of trails, depending on how much time you would like to spend hiking.  On the Lobos hikes, you are sure to spot seals, beautiful succulents, and jagged seaside cliffs.

Here in Monterey Bay, you are sure to get your typical California seaside vacation while experiencing new and exciting things as well.  From the huge aquarium to the the bustling Wharf to the natural opportunities outside Monterey, you and your family are sure to have an excellent time.
