Meet the HTC Heads of Costumes

Amid all of the chaos within a typical afternoon in the Music Hallway as actors and actresses of HTC recite monologues and stage crew assembles parts of the set, I was able to sit down with Harriton’s three new Heads of Costumes. With the Fall Production of “A Midsummer Nights Dream” there were many questions to ask these three juniors.

1). What are the biggest challenges you face as Costume heads?

Kimmie: Incorporating not only our creative ideas, but matching them with the director’s ideas.

Kayley: Making sure everything is done on time and reaches the deadline.

Margot: Also making sure everyone participates in costumes and has an assigned task.

2). What is the best part about being in HTC?

Kayley: The friends you make the memories you make

Margot: The food you eat

Kimmie: Having the whole company connect as a family

Margot: I like bringing freshmen in and making them feel welcomed

3). What’s the funniest thing that has taken place in Costumes?

Kayley: CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE FISH?!

Margot: So, once upon a time a costumes girl had a fish in a fishbowl. It was a baby fish named Kanye AKA Yeezus.

Kayley: I dare you to put that in

Me: I did

Margot: This costumes girl dropped the fish and….this fish might have died on the floor right there and then

Kayley: Everyone cried for a little but there was a nice funeral for Kanye

4). What is your favorite costume you have created and why?

Margot: Honestly, mine was the skirt that Julia James spun out of in Drowsy Chaperone. It was a technically weird costume because we had to figure out how it would work on stage since she had to spin out of it.

Kimmie: The costumes in Drowsy were super fun to make. Nolan’s vest in Godspell was also unique because I really liked being able to deconstruct and remake it.

Kayley: I really liked making Julia’s robe in Drowsy. It was fun to have a project and see it executed on stage.

5). How long does it take on average to make one full costume?

 Margot: About a week

Kayley and Kimmie: Yeah that sounds about right

6). If you could be one character from a Midsummer Nights Dream who would you be and why?

Margot: Oberon, because he is going to have a really cool costume!

Kayley: I want to be Titania because she is a princess and she seems really cool

Kimmie: And she will have a really intricate royal costume

Kayley: And she seems like she would be popular!

Margot: Obviously! She is a fairy QUEEN!

7). What do you hope people will notice about your costumes when they go to see the show?

Kimmie: I hope they appreciate the detail

Kayley: And all of the effort we put in, the thought that we put into the color scheme and the way that the pieces fit together to create an entire vision

Margot: That was literally what I was going to say but in different words!

8). If you could have anyone help you in designing costumes who would it be?

Margot: Emma Seymour and Alana Koenig, because they were the costumes heads before us and they were our mentors. We looked up to them a lot and they taught us everything we know!

Kimmie: They truly helped us become who we are today.

Kayley: Yeet!

9). You are stuck on a deserted island. You can only take three things. What do you take?

Margot: Oh so each of us pick one thing because it’s the three things between us all?

Me: Yes three things between the three of you.

Kimmie: I would take a caterpillar because the caterpillar would turn into a butterfly, and the butterfly would give us a sense of enjoyment and we could fly away.

Kayley: I’m afraid of butterflies so this would not be enjoyable for me!

Me: So this butterfly is capable of lifting three people?

Kimmie: Yes basically!

Kayley: Can I just bring macaroni and cheese or something?

Me: Yes.

Kayley: Okay so unlimited macaroni and cheese for Kayley.

Margot: I would bring a pillow so I could take naps. OOH can I bring a pillow pet so when Kayley is mean to me, I could talk to someone?

10). What are you most excited to design for this show?

Kayley: I think we can all agree on fairies!

Margot: YEET!

11) Should people come to the play?

Kayley: YES! We have talented actresses and actors!

Kimmie: All of the hard work that was put into the show for HTC!

Margot: But mostly costumes!

Kayley: Yeah of course costumes!

All: MK squared wants to remind you #stumes is life. #stumes: Get it trending!
