After three years, the New York best selling series, The Lunar Chronicle by Marissa Meyer has come to an end with Winter. Meyer ends her dystopian fairy tale spin-off with a bang as Cinder and her friends head into battle with the wicked Lunar queen, Levanna.

The Lunar Chronicles began in 2012 with the release of Cinder. Each of the four books introduces readers to a new heroine, each based on a fairy tale princess; in this case, Cinder is based on Cinderella. In this world, she is a cyborg who is treated like property by her adoptive mother.

In the second book, Scarlet (2013), readers meet Scarlet, the Red Riding Hood of the series and a fierce farmer who is in search of her grandmother.

Next we meet the Rapunzel of the story, Cress, in her book Cress (2014). Cress is a shy Lunar girl who was sent to work in a satellite by Queen Levanna because of her skills with technology and her lack of the “Lunar gift.”

Lastly, readers are introduced to Winter, in Winter (2015).  Winter is the stepdaughter of Levanna and is the most beautiful of them all, therefore being Snow White. Winter does not use her “Lunar gift.” Because of this, she has been driven insane.

Each character in the series is unique in her own way. Whether they are brave or timid, a Lunar or an Earthen.

This series is set in the future, after two more World Wars and colonization on the moon. This colony on the moon is called “Luna.” Luna is ruled by Queen Levanna, who is more of a dictator than a monarch.

The people of Luna, or Lunars, have been bestowed with a gift. With bioelectricity, they are able to use glamour and manipulation. Some are born as shells: people who aren’t born with this gift, like Cress. Some refuse to use the gift and go insane, like Winter. They see hallucinations and can’t tell what is real or not real.

None of the books in The Lunar Chronicles let the readers down. Each book is action-packed and full of romance and plot twists as the one before. Each character has her own storyline and endearing personality. And Winter is no exception.

Meyer doesn’t disappoint the fans of The Lunar Chronicles with Winter, which keeps them at the edge of their seats the whole way through. The novel perfectly wraps up Cinder’s story. And no matter how many times it seems like everything will go badly, just remember that fairy tales always have a happy endings.
