When December rolls around, there’s one sound I hear: the sound of sleigh bells. Although I am a supporter of all holidays and traditions, one of my favorite times of the year is the winter holidays. They are filled with joy, laughter, hope and cheery music, which is so catchy that everyone has to join in.

There are many types of holiday music and it can be difficult to decide what to listen to. When a poll was taken by some Harriton students, the top three songs were “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Santa Baby” and “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” although there was a long list of many more favorites.

Over 50% of those surveyed like the classic and cover holiday music equally, and the top three holiday albums were “Christmas” (Michael Bublé), “Merry Christmas” (Mariah Carey) and “Sounds of the Season” (Taylor Swift).

Looking for a good Pandora station or Spotify playlist? We suggest “Today’s Christmas Radio” and “Modern Christmas!” for some recent covers of the classics. Some recent releases include “This is Christmas” (LeAnn Rimes), “A Maccabeats Hanukkah” and “Holiday Wishes” (Idina Menzel).

Although these three albums are all about the holiday season, they each have different songs, meanings and styles.

Not into regular Christmas music? Luckily for you, artists like Kanye, Snoop Dog (or Lion?) and Ludacris have released Christmas music in the form of rap so that the holiday spirit can be enjoyed by all music genres.

Holiday music is so different and diverse, while keeping the common theme of happiness and spirit. So turn on some jams and get in a holiday mood!
