On C days during Learn 1, some Harriton students are getting flexible – with the help of Yoga Club. Founded by senior Andela Barun and sponsored by Mr. Magner, the club meets and does half-hour routines in the Highlander Gym. They are always open for new members, who can drop by for a session and see if Yoga Club works for them.

The Harriton Banner: When was Yoga Club started at Harriton?

Andela Barun: I came up with the idea for a yoga club towards the middle of my junior year (last year) and I finally decided to create one this year with the help of Mr. Magner.

HB: How did the idea for this club come about?

AB: One of my friends and I both have knee issues and are not able to participate in sports that involve any sort of running anymore. The two of us were in gym class doing individual sports and I thought it would be a great idea to continue that outside of gym. I wanted to create something for students who want to stay active but can’t or don’t necessarily want to do Harriton sports. Yoga is gentle to the body while still giving it a tough workout.

HB: What are some benefits students can gain from Yoga Club?

AB: There’s actually a great article that explains a lot of the benefits. Some of the major ones are flexibility, [and] it makes you happier, healthier, and less stressed.

HB: Who should join Yoga Club?

AB: Any student that wants to relax during the middle of the day should join Yoga Club. It’s an easy way to get some exercise during the school day and it makes the rest of the day so much better!
