Interview with Jonah Gillespie-Sickmen

Jonah Gillespie-Sickmen had a phenomenal season this year in cross country, placing 4th place at the Central League Championship, 37th at the District I Championship, and 39th at the State Championship. Even though he placed 39th at States, he was the 10th junior to finish, meaning that he has a substantial chance of reaching the top ten at states next year. He is one of most talented athletes at Harriton High School.

HB: What were your expectations coming into the season?

J: Nothing really in particular. As a team, we had a general goal of making states. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. But, aside from that, I set a goal to be the best that I could as a runner.

HB: Were you surprised about how good of a season you had this year?

J: The only thing I expect of myself is to be the best that I can be. I suppose I was surprised, but I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish. I’m excited for the future, especially with the talent that our team possesses.

HB: What is your thought process during a race?

J. Start strong. Catch him. Catch him. Catch him. Finish.

HB: What is your favorite memory of this past cross country season?

J: I love the cross country team. They make every practice and race fun; they’re great people and friends. I couldn’t tell you my favorite particular moment.

HB: What are your goals for the upcoming indoor/outdoor track season?

J: Just keep improving, that’s my main goal. And if I can do that, another states run, along with the team, is definitely a goal.

HB: Who has been your greatest mentor this year?

J: I don’t know. That’s tough. I’ve had great support from all my teammates, peers, and coaches all year. I appreciate them all.

HB: Do you want to continue running after High School?

J: I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. I understand that being able to run in college would be a great privilege but I’m not sure if I want to keep running.

HB: What is your favorite thing about running?

J: I can’t disclose that information. Coach may see. But it involves not running.

HB: What do you like to do in your free time?

J: Why, run of course.
