Every so often, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center brings the most illustrious Broadway stars to the cozy and intimate Merriam theatre for a night of musical revue. Last Thursday night was no exception, as Sutton Foster (Younger, Anything Goes) brought her distinctly “showtime” vocals and vivacious personality to Philly.

Gracing the stage with a bubbly disposition, she began her repertoire with a medley of hits from her most famous starring roles, such as “Millie” in Thoroughly Modern Millie, “Star-To-Be” in Annie, and Fiona in Shrek the Musical.

She then alternated through sumptuous renditions of classics and lesser-known standards from more novel musicals, such as Violet. Her cutely effervescent nature infused each song with an immense amount of vigor and liveliness, as well as emotion in more morose tunes such as Les Miserables’ “On My Own.”

After a bit over an hour of singing and schmoozing with the crowd, she brought dear friend and fellow actress Megan McGinnis onstage to serenade the crowd with impressive deliveries of masterworks such as “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

Then, the two ladies dispensed the glittery dust of their magnificent head-voices by harmonizing on arrangements of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Old Friends” and “Bookends,” leaving the mass in wonderment.

Ms. Foster then concluded the set with a shimmering performance of the song that originally catapulted her to Broadway stardom, Thoroughly Modern Millie’s “Gimme Gimme.” The audience, particularly diverse in age, was left enraptured by her pieces, a warm way to end a cold Thursday evening.
