Spring Sports Preview

As the last snow of the year melts off of the ground and patches of patches of brown grass finally fight their way to the surface, students can not help but be reminded of the changing seasons. Spring sports are officially underway! Here is a breakdown of what to expect from our athletes this season:

Baseball:

The Harriton Baseball team has a great returning line up this season. Watch out for returning seniors Andre Pendleton and Jake Rosenberg, who were 1st and 3rd team all-Central honorees last season, respectively.

Crew:

After an impressive season last year, with one boat winning nationals and placing 2nd in an international competition, crew is one of Harriton’s most successful teams. However, it often seems to slip under the radar. Marisa Cohen, a coxswain for the boy’s boat with Sebastiaan Van Wieran, Mike Yaron, Mats Terwiesch, and Edvard Foss, told us, “This season we really want to win at the city championship as well as make it to youth nationals, which is in California.” The crew team has its first scrimmage on Wednesday. This is a group of kids that the Herd should keep an eye out for.

Boys Lacrosse:

This year’s boys’ lacrosse team is even better than last year’s. Tired of the girls overshadowing them, the boys look to find some success on the field. Junior lacrosse player Jack Veasey tells the Herd to look out for an impressive season behind the powerful forces of sophomore Matt Binnion and senior Dave Stewart.

Girls Lacrosse:

Defending central league, district, and state champs, #RamLax has a huge season ahead of them. Watch out for returning seniors Sabrina Tabasso and Katie Melvin on the offensive end, Hillary Lemonick on defense, and Melina Avery in goal. The team will travel to Florida this Thursday to play the number one ranked team in the country. Junior Annika Iyer, who helped the team capture states last year, expressed her excitement for the upcoming season: “We are really looking forward to playing a great team and can’t wait to get to Hershey again.”

Track:

After a strong winter season, the track team is ready to excel in the spring season. Junior Kate Clark told us, “I really think this year and the coming one are our team’s years. Our upperclassmen girl’s team has been working very hard for a couple years now and have shown we can do some damage in the league. We have a handful of talented freshmen working together with the upperclassmen that we expect to make a big impact this year and significant, possibly state-level impact in the years to come.”

Softball:

Expect the softball team to make an improvement from its performance last year. There is new talent on the team this year, including freshman Sonia Groeneveld, who will be a varsity pitcher. Also watch out for key returning players such as last year’s offensive MVP Sydney Handel, as well as another power hitter, Lyndsey Diebel.

Boys Tennis:

The Harriton boys tennis team is always among the best in the state. This year will be no exception. The team has a great returning lineup including Jeff Solomon, Griffin Kivitz, and Aaron Lazaar. The boys are gearing up for another great season with hard work and enthusiasm. As Griffin Kivitz put it, “I am Harriton tennis. Hear my roar. ROAAAAR.”
