Sponsored by Mrs. Dwyer and run by president Grace Tang, the Film/Photo Club is one of the most flexible and fun clubs in this school. The meetings work around the students’ schedules and happen about three times a month during RAM.  Harriton is filled almost to capacity with busy students, so this activity is an exemplary choice for anyone.

The Film/Photo Club has existed at Harriton for longer than you might expect. Mrs. Dwyer, also known as the ruler of the Help Center, took charge of the Film/Photo Club from a retiring teacher eight or nine years ago, after she started the TV/Film Club eleven years ago. The name has varied over the years, sometimes the Film/Photo Club, sometimes just the Film Club. This year the club’s focal subject has been film, although photographers are welcome as well.

The club’s main activity is to feature a movie every month in the LGI, as you have probably known from their vibrant posters and frequent daily announcements. These movies are selected by a club vote. The Film/Photo Club also works towards aiding other clubs by promoting movies corresponding to the other club’s values and donating to them the proceeds from concessions. In January, they joined forces with the Gay-Straight Alliance to present the movie “RENT”, and in April, they showed “Mean Girls” to fund the new group No Place for Hate.

Though the group’s main activity is the featured film of the month, members are self-motivated to also work on their own projects of film and photography. Some of these photos have been displayed throughout the building. Also, if another club or organization needs photos or videos taken, they are the ones to offer assistance. For example, some members were recruited recently to take pictures for junior prom.

Although the school year is melting away, this club is still accepting new members! “Come on in! We are open to anybody that wants to join!” says Mrs. Dwyer. As it is on the smaller side with just eight current members, this ever-evolving club is looking for more people to join now and next year, and it is open to new ideas and new people. If you love film and photography, if you love watching movies, and if you love being part of a club that does not consume much time, contact Mrs. Dwyer to join the Film/Photo Club!
