As we approach the coldest season, the perfect way to spend time with family and close ones is to stay home and watch movies together! Especially with COVID cases increasing in our area, this is a safe way to still have fun.

Below is a list of movie recommendations that are festive for the holiday season, as well as films from many different genres that are beloved classics or trending at the moment.

The Grinch (2018) PG

Appropriate for all ages, Universal Pictures’ adaption of The Grinch by Dr. Seuss follows the story of the Grinch and his loyal dog Max as they plot to steal Christmas and get rid of the Whos’ Christmas celebrations once and for all. Entertaining and touching, this modern version of The Grinch is filled with tons of holiday cheer and spirit.

The Darkest Minds (2018) PG-13

A dystopian movie based on the book by Alexandra Bracken, The Darkest Minds is about a future America affected by a deadly virus—that actually somewhat reflects the current COVID situation. Only influencing the younger generation, those who survive to end up having mysterious abilities and are sent to camps.

Four brave and daring teens, however, manage to break out and are on the run from a dangerous government. Riveting and full of action, The Darkest Minds will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.

Enola Holmes (2020) PG-13

Incredibly popular at the moment and debuting at number 2 on Netflix’s most-watched list a few weeks ago, Millie Bobby Brown stars as Enola Holmes in this 2020 film. While investigating the mysterious disappearance of her mother, she meets Viscount Tewkesbury along the way and forms an unlikely friendship. This movie also reflects many important themes such as sacrifice, familial bonds, and feminism.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) PG

A beloved Christmas classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas follows the adventures of Jack Skellington, a bored king who accidentally ventures into Christmastown. There, he begins his scheme to kidnap Santa Claus. Receiving many positive reviews, this movie is great for the whole family. The beautifully animated fairytale will immediately captivate viewers with its ghoulish fairytale. 

The Impossible (2012) PG-13

This film really makes us cherish the special moments with our family which the upcoming holiday season is all about. The Impossible, which was recently on Netflix’s most trending list, is the true story of a family who while vacationing in Thailand, are caught in the midst of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Separated, the family desperately searches for each other in the chaotic aftermath. Starring Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, and Ewan McGregor, this movie shows how even in the darkest of times, bravery and strength can bring a family back together.
